Produce for Week One

market carrots

market kale

My selections for this week:

  • about 6 various heads of lettuce
  • 2 small/medium bunches of kale
  • 3 bunches of spinach
  • 3 bunches of (huge ass) carrots (crap. i have no idea why I bought so many.)
  • Small bag of green beans
  • 4-5 small red potatoes
  • 4 Asian pears

and my pride and joy (dun dun dun!):

One 20 pound box of assorted Macintosh apples, Bosc pears, and a few other kind of apples…

market box of apples

So this might seem like a lot of produce for one person. which it certainly is. keep in mind I was a strict raw foodist for a while, and now I’d consider myself “high raw” so I can easily eat massive amounts of fresh food. And perhaps I overshot it a bit and got too much. We’ll see this week!

I purchased all of this fresh, local, and organic food for 69 dollars. That is exactly what I was aiming for. I saw on the eat local challenge that the Department of Labor and Bureau of Labor statistics estimates a one person household should spend $68 per week on food.  I feel I probably could have done this more cheaply and that this week is a bit of a trial run. (I’m writing about price simply to show that I got all of this amazing food for a great price — if I can do it, other people can do it too!)

I am intigued by the eat locally movements, I will be checking back to see how you are doing. It all looks good, and it sounds like you were able to keep the cost down.

    Good Luck!
