Is there a word for when reality of your life gets flipped upside down, knocked against a wall, and spun around on its head seven times?

If there is, I would use it to describe some recent events in my life.

I will be back to blogging soon!

Matters of the heart have taken priority to writing. I have been out-letting with writing, drawing, coloring, cleaning, and talking. All is about 95% better (and on some days even better than before).

I’ll be back soon.

Love,

Sunshine

a Sexist idea

how it works

So Kate Harding had this posted, and it struck home so strongly I wanted to re-post it here.

I’m a girl that always thought I was bad at math (not true) and felt very intimidated by the boys in my classes through school. Now obviously this had something to do with my own confidence in my abilities, since not every girl I went to school with felt the same way, but in my experience this really does happen. BUT it seems like more and more women are getting involved in math and science, and this is becoming less of the norm. :) :) :)

Myspace Photos

tila2 tila1

observation:

there are many many women wearing lingerie, bikinis, or otherwise sexually suggestive articles in their MYSPACE photos

why?

it’s as if there is a whole culture of bikini models/naughty nurses/pornography stars are attempting to break into the biz thru online networking –

– one photo at a time

I have no issue with the photos themselves

it just makes me ask:

why are we (women) putting this image out?  why are we so into degrading ourselves?

is it for the attention?

is it the power in feeling sexy?

are these actual models wanting to get into the lingerie business?

i dont get it. nor do I understand the desire to put it on the internet.

when did being explicitly and obviously beautiful and sexual become the standard we aspire to. what happened to a little mystery?

just a thought.

Glossed Over dot com

For anyone who finds a large degree of ridiculousness in fashion magazines, this website might be for you. Glossed over dot come breaks down fashion magazines, the headlines, the photographs, the totally bizarre things they say. I don’t like it all, as it can sometimes be difficult to figure out what the point is — are they loving or hating on the new issue of a magazine? But it’s amusing, and sheds some reality on this crazy industry we all accept as normal. My favorite thing is the Lowest Common Denominator feature, where they break things down as in : 42 — the number of ad pages devoted to cosmetics, etc. I’m working on my own version, so stay tuned for that…

Ins-pa-rat-ional?

inspirational blogger

I have been tagged with a blogging award! this seems so anti-climactic since I only noticed after checking this very neglected site weeks after dear Connie at Naked Food Cafe tagged me –  thank you Connie!

Anyway, i’m not going to follow the rules. I don’t really want to tag people, and many of the blogs I frequent have already received this lovely award. I will, however, note some of the blogs that I adore, in no particular order:

  •  We Like It Raw. Love it, can’t get enough, always.
  • Raw Model. Anthony is really cool, one of my favorite writers and a surefire dose of inspiration for your day.
  • Every Woman has an Eating Disorder. Not cynical like it sounds - Dr. Stacy is a psychologist and works on all things disorder related, very insightful posts that are light (unlike the title might seem).
  • Kate Harding. The queen of fat acceptance bloggers, and she is hardcore and has opinions that rocked me at first. but I like seeing what she has to say, even if she does scare me.
  • Back in Skinny Jeans. Stephanie is really really honest, and I like that.
  • Size Ate. A woman of the theater who has a show I have yet to see, she blogs abogs about body image and other random things of interest, with a light and funny style.
  • Fat Free Vegan. I’ve honestly never tried any of the recipes, but the pictures are pretty.
  • Courtney Pool. I started to read her juice feasting blog, and she is a girl totally living on the edge, authentic, and pursuing her passions in raw food and life. I check her site daily and just WISH i could be a teeny bit more like her.

Home Stretch & Blog Thoughts

Hey lovelies,

This Thanksgiving mini-break has been wonderful and felt quite odd (it’s weird to go from extremely busy to doing nothing in just a blink of an eye… I got used to it very fast!). I enjoyed this break by doing a whole lot of nothing, readily welcoming some “zone out” time to seriously veg and not use my brain for anything.

So tomorrow I go back to school and I have 15 days until my last final exam is complete — the home stretch, final run, the completion of this very hectic quarter. I will not be blogging much because of this, though I might pop in for a few quick thoughts.

Recently though I’ve been thinking and would like some input on where to go with this blog. Currently it’s all over the place (which I actually kind of like) covering anything from my life in school, eating locally, body imagine/body acceptance, environmental tips/thoughts, gratitude,  stress, etc etc etc. Soo if you come around and read this blog… would you like to see more of the same, or greater focus on specific topics? There are many people writing some wonderful blogs about many of the things I mentioned (if not all), that it seems my niche might be in what I know most dearly — writing about being a young, conscious, striving college student wanting to excel at it all. Perhaps I’ll keep it the same, and dedicate different months to covering specific topics in depth? I don’t know, so any input is greatly appreciated! Please comment or e-mail me.

Love & Thanks,

Laura

Time Flies

Happy Monday everyone!

When I in grade/high school I always remember the week last way tooooooo long and the weekend always feeling so far away. I hated Mondays and would cherish my weekends, which never seemed quite long enough. Well the weekend still doesn’t feel quite long enough, but I notice that time is moving SO quickly now. The week doesn’t feel long anymore. I feel like time is moving at such a rate that all I need to do is surrender to it in free fall and let it carry me to the next thing. I don’t know if its just me, or if its some funky energy in the universe right now. I find it to be disconcerting at moments, and also quite fun at others. When things are stressful or unpleasant I try not to blink an eye, because I know it will be over in a flash (and it always is!). It’s also a bit worrisome because I feel like if time is passing quickly then I could easily end up wasting a whole decade not enjoying my life.

But instead of worrying, it’s a great reminder to relish the simple moments. I don’t even have a notion of days or weeks anymore. Just this moment. I actually am liking this pace.

What about you? Does time fly in your life or do you like the pace?

Also, quick update: Blogging will be sporadic for the next couple weeks because midterms round two begin soon and I am striving to reduce all stress and be prepared much ahead of time!!

Best Show Ever

In addition to reading the Babysitter’s Club Books, my favorite TV show when I was little was Saved By the Bell. I am SO happy to find these on youtube!

The guys dancing…

The classic scene that save me from the dangers of drugs:

And learning about unhealthy conflict resolution:

“Shoulds” of blogging

So i’ll admit, I jumped into blogging full of endless inspiration and a huge notebook of ideas for what I wanted to write about. Just a few weeks into it and I notice I’ve been getting caught up in mind chatter about it. Feeling like I “should” be a better example of the things I want to write about, like I “should” have more profound things to say, wondering why anyone “should” care about whatever I write about, blah blah blah!

Reminder to mind: be quiet.

Note to self and reader: I’m doing this blog not from the position of an expert  by any stretch of the imagination, but rather as a conscious human being on my path to becoming more conscious. Something I feel that many people share a similar path. I want to make this more personal, so I thought i would begin by sharing what’s up with me in my process of creating this little site. If you, dear reader, enjoy anything you see, or see anything that might improve it, please leave a comment or e-mail me! I want this to be a discussion. I want to receive feedback, and hear others’ experiences with the things I post.

ok, feeling free-er.

expect more in the days to come, free from “shoulds.”
